DC Cupcakes Continues Exhaustive PR Tour

According to Georgetown Cupcake's Facebook page, they'll be on The View next week. While the details are spotty (as in, no mention of air date or why they're on), they do have this picture with Whoopi:

Not only were they shmoozing with the star of "Eddie", but they promptly showed up online at ABC News, talking about everything from their own favorite Georgetown Cupcake flavors (Chocolate Hazelnut and Salted Caramel, thank you very much) to more controversial topics, like whether cupcakes are a fad. Sure, they may be overdoing it at this point, but let's face it: Sophie and Katherine are the new ambassadors of Cupcake Country. I'm planning to run for President in 2024...get your signs ready now!!

I Seriously Need a Job at Zappo's, Like, Yesterday

While perusing the Holy Grail of cupcake blogs, Cupcakes Take the Cake, I stumbled across this video from online shoe store Zappo's in what can only be described as an homage to National Junk Food Appreciation Day.

Although I would never degrade my favorite bakery concoction to something so menial as "junk food" (better left to describe food-like substances such as Ring Dings, Skittles, or KFC Double-Downs)...

KFC's heart attack in a bag, the Double Down

...I appreciate their, er, appreciation of the little treats.

It gets boring around 1:00 when they start showing ice cream--to each their own, I guess--but things pick back up at the end when people start icing their cupcakes. F'reals, how do I get a job here?!?! Hopefully they have good dental!

Found My Halloween Costume

And no, I'm not going as Tiger Woods' 23rd mistress!

After many feeble attempts to acquire one, I found this highly covetable grown-up cupcake costume at Cupcakes Take the Cake:

Unfortunately, this highly sophisticated and never gauche get-up is currently out of stock!!! Like, how could the  manufacturers NOT expect this thing to sell out within minutes of its ceremonial release?? Not to worry though...I'm on the waitlist. And when I finally get my polyester tunic and cupcake hat, it will be the finest $44.97 I've ever spent.

Not to be outdone, the guys can get in on this cupcake action too!!With this equally sophisticated and never inappropriate chocolate cupcake ensemble:

This, too, is on back order (or simply not available yet, it's hard to tell), but when it is, I will do everything in my power to get Kyle in this thing, so help me!!!!!!!!

Serious Eats Takes Cupcake Review Very...Seriously

New York City is to the cupcake culture as Israel is to the Jews: Mecca, birthright passage, crowded.

So, when I read that one of my favorite experimental foodie websites, Serious Eats, chose the very best cupcake in all of New York, I figured they'd get it right.

In total, they sampled 60 cupcakes from 47 bakeries, including well-known establishments like Magnolia Bakery, Crumbs, and Billy's Bakery. After narrowing down the top 12, they settled on Baked, based in Brooklyn no less, as the overall winner.

The flavors sampled at Baked--they look pretty good

My NYC cupcake experience is limited to having sampled day-old Magnolia cupcakes transported via bus to DC by a very kind intern, so I can't quite offer up my two cents here--you know I would if I could!!!

What I can say is Magnolia didn't even make the top 12 in the Serious Eats line-up (and deservedly so). Somebody should really tell these people they're wasting their time:

CupcakesOMG! Turns One-Year Old

Today is this little blog's birthday. Can you believe it?? I finally found something I didn't want to quit after a few weeks. My mom is surely very proud.

How did I celebrate the birth of my virtual child? Well, sadly, I'm on one of the boring-est diets known to man, so alas, there were no cupcakes. I did however buy these:

Image via Tilly's

Yep, those are key covers...in the shape of cupcakes. Cupcakes with personality, I might add. Right now, I'm really favoring the mustacheod cupcake. I imagine his name would be Senor Cupcake, Manuel, or Rrrrrrrrrricarrrrrrdo.

My celebratory purchase came from Urban Outfitters, but in cassic hipster mass-produced fashion, I overpaid. They were $8 at the store, but I found them for $5.99 here.

So how are you celebrating CupcakesOMG!'s one year anniversary? More importantly, what flavor did you celebrate with??

Chocolate Ice Cream Cupcakes

Dear God,

Image via Made with Pink

Do you get some kind of SICK pleasure out of torturing me?

Surely, you must, as I see no other reason you would put this delish-looking chocolate ice cream cupcake all up in my FACE when you know good and well that I'm starving myself on the Paleo diet!!!

W.T.F., God?!?!?! I mean, Jesus!

Best,
CupcakesOMG!

"DC Cupcakes" Only as Fake as Georgetown Itself

So TLC's "reality" show DC Cupcakes, featuring DC's very own Georgetown Cupcake, premiered last Friday, and to record numbers. Unfortunately, the show has left many of those viewers hungry for something a little more sweet and a little less...fake. Jezebel summed things up pretty well, saying "every single aspect of this show seems fake and forced, with the exception of the cupcakes themselves, which actually look pretty good, and would probably look better if they weren't surrounded by a pile of LIES."

God, I wish I had written that.

I hate to admit it, but it's true. The show is sickeningly contrived and conscious of itself, but then again, isn't that true of Georgetown in general??!! I realize some of you haven't spent much time in the upper echelons of DC's preppiest neighborhood, so let me break it down for you with this graph:
I mean, it's Georgetown--everyone is fake and contrived!! What do you want??

So yeah, their Mom (aka Mommy) is pretty useless, their head baker Andres seems like kind of a prick, and the sisters are control freaks who can't help but look at the camera every few seconds, but so what? Who cares?! They're cupcake bakers, not actors. Save your expectations for the pros, y'all.

In case you missed it, here's a clip:

Another Day, Another PR Dollar Spent on DC Cupcakes

What are my favorite cupcake-based reality show darlings up to this time, you ask? Well, today you're in for a real treat, as you get to see Sophie and Katherine decorate cuppies for the Angel Rescue League. Instead of their usual cream cheese swirl and a floral fondant shape, they decide to use a grass-tip on their piping bag filled with green tinted icing. The top it with, what else? A dog-shaped fondant decoration.

I never claimed they were saving lives, people!!!! You gotta admit, though--this show looks super fun!!

Cupcake Recipe Link Time

No-bake Grasshopper Mint Oreo Cookie Cupcakes?!?! I'm in. jk-ing about the no bake part, btw, I just thought it sounded better ;)

The PR blitz for DC Cupcakes in in full effect, bitches! Now Sophie and Katherine are whoring themselves out sharing one of their favorite childhood recipes, Ice Cream Cone cupcakes, on YouTube. They're so effing cute. I hate them.

If you're making Ice Cream Cone cupcakes anyway, why not make some homemade hot fudge sauce to go with them??

Isn't, like, the something-year anniversary of Elvis' death coming up? Either way, you don't need a good excuse to make these vegetarian/vegan cupcakes in honor of the King's all-time favorite grilled peanut butter, banana, bacon sandwich. Do you think Elvis was preggers when he came up with that one?

Since we're on the topic of peanut butter, these Fluffer Nutter Cupcakes filled with Nutella looks absolutely, dare I say, bananas!!!!

If you're like me and currently punishing yourself by not eating life's pleasures, such as cheese, bread, and more importantly, sugar, maybe you could spend your weekend knitting this cupcake hat and mitten set instead. Maybe you also want to watch paint dry, but it's your call.

BREAKING NEWS: DC Cupcakes Teaser

The Washington Post just posted this teaser from local cupcakery Georgetown Cupcake's new 6-part series "DC Cupcakes", premiering this Friday at 10 PM EST on TLC:

I haven't said it in a while, but: O.M.G. This actually looks like it's going to be entertaining and, might I say, informative. Unless you've been on the run from U.S. and Bahamian authorities for the past two years, you are likely aware my dream is to open my own bakery some day. I feel like this show will be to me what 3 years of a $150,000 law school education is to my friend Chris: overall, a big waste of time, but necessary nonetheless. My DVR is already set.

Summertime Cupcakes Incite Raging Case of Lesbianism

I love surprises. I love surprises best when they involve the sweet taste of revenge, victory, or sugar. Today's surprise will leave you with a taste for the latter.

The gal over at B More Sweet has taken the excitement and joie de vivre of summertime, and creamed, mixed, and whipped it into this little surprise for the senses.

She calls it a Strawberry Funfetti Cupcake. I call them The Sweet Elixir of Life. I like my name better.

As her name would suggest, yes, indeed, these are funfetti cupcakes. And while they were made from a box mix, I'll let it pass, because she's doctored it up by filling the cupcakes with whole strawberries and topped it with Key Lime Cream Cheese frosting, pink sanding sugar, lime zest, and a wedge of fresh lime.

I have no problem going lezzie for a quick second, just so I can give this woman a big ol' French kiss as a thank you.

Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer: A Christening

Tomorrow, my boyfriend is whisking me off to the tropical isle of Jamaica for my birthday, which you all should be well aware of by now (the birthday, not the isle. Everybody gets a free pass on geography knowledge at CupcakesOMG!) Even though I won't be getting my hair wet or tanning or hanging with the locals, we're gonna have a GREAT time!!!!!

Since we're going to be extremely out of town on my actual birthday, he decided to give me my present last night: the pièce de résistance of my pink KitchenAid collection.
I even look good in the reflection of the bowl!!! How DO I do it??

As much as I wanted to break into this bad boy last night, I just didn't have time, what with packing my 17 outfits for our 5 day trip. It's cool 'cus idk what I'd make anyway. There are so many options!! I could make mayonnaise, meringue cookies, or any of my delectable cupcake recipes.

I'm pretty sure there's some cardinal rule about making your first batch of anything from a gifted KitchenAid stand mixer for the very person who gifted it in the first place. If I know one thing about Kyle, it's that he likes beer. And the only thing he likes more than beer is chocolate and peanut butter. That's about where my knowledge of things Kyle likes ends, as I find paying attention any more than that takes away from my valuable time in front of the mirror.

These look pretty good:
